Chantelle De Abreu

Clinical Psychologist

I am a clinical psychologist based in Cape Town. I work with adolescents & adults (short & long term) who may be feeling stressed or overwhelmed, and seeking to find wellness as they cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, and other life changes (relationship, health, employment). I also work with those pursuing personal development.

My Approach

My therapy style is collaborative, creating a warm and understanding space where clients can explore new insights into themselves and current difficulties while being equipped with the skills to bring about constructive changes and alleviate distress.

My therapy style is non-judgemental and empathic, focusing on the holistic wellness of my clients. I work from a relational psychodynamic framework, allowing the client to create some understanding of how past experiences may be influencing their current difficulties. Although guided by this framework I also utilise other techniques and skills which may be appropriate to the circumstances. These may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and EMDR (a useful technique for processing trauma).

About Me

I obtained my Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where my practical training at the UCT Child Guidance Clinic included providing psychometric assessment and individual therapy for children, adolescents and adults. My clinical training and community service was completed in the Department of Health at hospitals and clinics in Cape Town.

While working at Groote Schuur Hospital I gained experience working with adults, adolescents, and children who had medical diagnosis in addition to mental health concerns. I worked in the outpatient department where I offered adults therapeutic services in addition to neuropsychological testing. I also worked at the psychiatric acute wards at Valkenburg Hospital. While working at Stikland Hospital I worked within the addiction unit as well as the therapeutic wards where individual and group work was focused on. I founded Educating Athletes, a non-profit organisation that assisted aspiring young athletes with the opportunity to complete their secondary education through holistic intervention. Educating Athletes assisted numerous youth in completing their secondary education while ensuring they received appropriate guidance and support.

Throughout my career I have remained passionate about workig alongside individuals to bring about growth and wellness in their lives.
