There are times in our lives when our ordinary ways of functioning and dealing with difficult issues don’t seem to work anymore, and we struggle to make sense of our thoughts, emotions, behaviour and relationships. My experience of therapy is that it can offer a warm and honest reflective environment where we can learn to understand ourselves better and forge new ways of responding which will enable us to live our lives with greater freedom, satisfaction and dignity.
I provide both short term therapy (providing insights and skills to deal with immediate issues) and long term therapy (reflecting in greater depth on your life and entrenched patterns of response). I work with adults individually or as couples.
There are many different approaches and tools which a therapist can use to help a client. Different people usually find some more helpful than others, and it’s important to think about what resonates with you. My primary training was in the field of psychodynamic therapy, but I have found that an integrative approach is often necessary for the particular needs of individuals. I am trained in BWRT Level 1, and use this in working with trauma. I have a special interest in the healing capacity of mindfulness practices, and (where appropriate) incorporate this into my work with clients. I have been involved in running Mindfulness Courses since 2016.
In working with couples, I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, which is an evidence-based intervention approach that seeks to re-establish and build the emotional bond between partners. I am a member of the EFT South Africa leadership team.
My areas of interest are broad and include:
I believe that talking about spirituality is sometimes an important part of the therapeutic process, and I hope to provide the kind of reflective space where those who are struggling to cope can engage freely and comfortably about both mental health and faith issues.
During the first three or so sessions, I will spend time listening in detail to your current difficulties and finding out about your background. After this, we will talk about whether we feel we can work together and contract for therapy. Generally, it is most effective to meet once a week. How long you continue to see me depends on your needs, and we will discuss this at the outset and during the course of therapy.
