Stuart Horn

Clinical Psychologist

I have been a registered  clinical psychologist since 1984. After completing my Masters in Clinical Psychology at Rhodes University I worked at various community clinics and hospitals for the Department of Health before opening my own full- time practise in Newlands in 1997. I have trained intern-psychologists and have lectured and run programmes for post-graduate psychology students which focus on the effective resolution of psychological crises.

I have a wide range of clients in my practise, from students to people who are retired, but the majority of them are men in their thirties and forties. Most clients initially contact me because they are experiencing some unhappiness or distress or a specific challenge in their life involving work, relationship conflicts, life-phase adjustments, anxiety, depression or some destructive behaviour. Many clients decide to continue with therapy long after the crisis has been resolved as they discover therapy to be a continual process which helps them be more successful in their work, improves their communication skills and enhances their interpersonal relationships and sense of well-being.

My therapeutic approach focuses on understanding the relationships between our thoughts, our feelings and our actions and how past experiences and past relationships influence our present attitudes and behaviours.

I draw on a diversity of psychological models and theories and rely on insights and experiences I have gathered over twenty eight years in assisting a diverse range of people. My own personal psychotherapy and review of my work with other experienced professionals is an essential aspect of my practise.
