Therapy can be a process to restore oneself, which focuses on increasing your awareness of unconscious feelings, thoughts and behaviours, developing new insights into your motivations and resolving conflicts. Psychotherapy teaches you how to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills. I tailor my therapeutic approach to the specific needs of each individual patient.
My own individual growth and life experiences led me to the decision to continue full-time study in order to complete my Master’s degree in clinical psychology at a mature age. Before studying psychology I gained qualifications in business management and worked in the private and public sectors. This allowed me to interact with variety of different cultures and contexts. This equipped me to build relationships with people to truly realise what inner feelings a person experiences and to uniquely connect with that vulnerable part of each person I interact with.
It is important to me to offer and provide a safe space for therapy to explore true and difficult emotions. Therefore I pride myself on having an open and non-judgemental attitude to establish a therapeutic bond between the patient and the therapist. I place great importance in the ‘therapeutic alliance’ which means that therapy is an active collaboration between the therapist and patient.
My approach is broadly psychodynamic. I have a strong interest in Object Relations Theory.
Object Relations Theory focuses on the development of the patient’s internal processes and dynamics of thinking within the context of a relationship with a significant other. These relationships have a lasting effect and influence all future relationships and daily important decisions and thinking styles.
My approach allows the patient to gain insight into current problems and explore how past interpersonal relationships shaped a person’s current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This therapeutic technique also explores with the patient what underlying defences there are that maintains the presenting problem and to bring that into conscious awareness to allow restoration.
I also work extensively with evidence based treatment such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Reactive Emotional Behavioural Therapy (REBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) where appropriate.
Overall I provide supportive psychotherapy by applying the different modalities to help patients deal with their emotional distress and problems in daily living. It includes comforting, advising, encouraging, reassuring, and listening, attentively and sympathetically. As the therapist I provide an emotional outlet, a chance for patients to express themselves and be themselves.
