Nasreen Malek

Clinical Psychologist

I am a Clinical Psychologist based in Durban. I provide psychotherapy for both adults and children. My experience has been diverse. I have dealt with psychological issues related to acute mental health inpatients, on the one hand, to less severe issues in my work at an outpatient women and children’s hospital. I also worked as a Wits trauma counsellor at CSVR in Johannesburg. (See www.csvr.org.za/wits/annreps/annrep05.pdf)

Entering into therapy may be perceived as a new, refreshing experience with the promise of self-exploration and growth or it may be seen as quite a daunting avenue that may be the last resort for many. Whatever the initial access point, a good therapy outcome depends on a good client-therapist relationship that feels secure, honest and non-judgemental. In addition to exploring client’s difficulties and therapy goals, the first session gives clients an opportunity to determine their fit with me and an opportunity to ask questions related to the therapy.

My approach is individually-tailored to suit the needs and communication style of the client and the therapy I offer may be long-term or short-term.

My areas of interest are:

  • Womens’ Issues: Issues related to personal growth, motherhood/parenting, infertility, health issues, relationship issues, trauma, bereavement/grief, mental health issues
  • Children and adolescents: issues related to trauma, anxiety, depression, attention and behaviour problems, school difficulties, teasing and bullying.
  • Parent-Child Psychotherapy: This therapy focuses on establishing good attachment relationships. Caregivers are seen together with babies or children under the age of 5yrs. Issues dealt with include post-partum depression, concerns regarding feeding or sleeping etc. It also includes mother-child bonding with first time, inexperienced mothers or mothers feeling preoccupied with other life difficulties who are concerned about the impact this may have on the bonding between them and their baby/child.
  • Assessments:
    a. Infant and Child Developmental Assessments
    b. Child Intellectual and Emotional Assessments

Should you have any queries before you embark on your therapy experience, please feel free to call me. As far as possible, I handle all calls personally as I believe our relationship begins with the first contact, so if I am unable to take your call, I will call get back to you as soon as possible.
