I am a Clinical Psychologist and psychotherapist. I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
I work with a range of psychological experiences and disorders, but have a special interest in dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, mid-life issues, working with couples/marital issues. I am also interested in spirituality as a way to enhance one’s sense of life’s meaning.
While I am strongly influenced by many approaches, psychoanalysis and the approach of Jung interest me strongly. But I have considerable interest and experience in other methods such as cognitive behaviour therapy.
I have extensive experience in working with couples, and am interested in how to enable a couple to enhance a meaningful, shared life with one another. I am especially influenced by approaches which aim to facilitate a positive attachment between partners in a relationship.
I am also deeply interested in spirituality (whether seen in religious or other terms) and its link with mental health and wellbeing, as we all have to make meaning of our lives. I regularly run retreats at the interface of psychology and spirituality.
I also regularly run workshops and retreats on themes such as couples counselling, dreams and dreaming, masculinity, mindfulness and living mindfully, the Progoff journal method, and searching for God and the true self.
Finally, I have been extensively involved in researching issues of masculinity and its problems and am interested in how men deal with life challenges, and how men find the courage to leave the well-worn track and the familiar formulae of life, and attempt to create alternate and more meaningful ways of being men in the contemporary world.
I trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Natal, and later completed a doctorate (PhD) on the management of chronic pain and illness. I have had further training in psychotherapy in Germany and the USA. I was professor and director of training in Clinical Psychology at the Universities of Natal/KwaZulu-Natal, and practiced part-time as a clinical psychologist. I am now in full-time practice.
In addition to working as a psychotherapist I am involved in collaborative international research projects on HIV, men and masculinity, and spirituality and psychology.
