I follow a systemic, integrative approach to therapy – acknowledging that each therapeutic interaction may have unique outcomes; that therapy is an emergent process; that clients hold valuable, “insider-knowledge” about their lives; but that at times “expert” intervention may be required. I have a particular interest and specialised training in the field of trauma treatment, and mood and anxiety disorders related to traumatic loss or experiences, but I also work with most of the common problem areas which people struggle with such as:

Treatment areas:

  • Trauma (sexual/physical/emotional abuse; accidents; medical operations; sudden or traumatic death of a loved one)
  • Mood disorders (depression, bipolar)
  • Anxiety disorders and phobias
  • Addictions
  • Adjustment problems (e.g. new life phase/stage, changing circumstances)
  • Relationship problems
  • Identity/ self-worth issues
  • Stress management/ lifestyle
  • Mindfulness/ Spirituality
  • Personal development/ growth

See my website for more details concerning my therapeutic modalities, however I will briefly describe a few of the more innovative treatment approaches below:

Eye Movement Integration (EMI®) Therapy is a neuro-therapeutic modality for accessing and integrating traumatic memories and experiences. It is effective in the treatment of traumatic experiences such as physical/sexual/emotional abuse, near-death experiences, physical accidents and medical operations.

Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT®) removes strong negative emotions and undesirable behaviours associated with memories by creating new neural pathways.

Trauma and Tension Releasing Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) is a self-help technique that was developed by Dr David Berceli, which deliberately activates our bodies’ instinctive tremor mechanism in a safe and controlled way.  These tremors help to release muscular tension patterns that have built up in the body during stressful and traumatic life experiences. Tremoring is our body’s natural way of bringing the nervous system back into a calm and balanced state (homeostasis).

I work from a Narrative therapeutic approach to facilitate discussions concerning race, gender, power relations, experiences of inequality and injustice and how these impact on our sense of value and identities.

I also utilise the following approaches depending on the presenting problem: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Ego State Therapy (EST), and Mindfulness.

I believe that mental health cannot be isolated and treated separately from physical health, therefore I utilise many stress management and behaviour change techniques from the field of health psychology, and as well as motivational interviewing skills to assist clients in making the necessary lifestyle changes to enhance their physical wellbeing – which impacts on their mental health.
