I am a Counselling Psychologist in private practice in Lakeside and Rosebank.  I have been working as a psychotherapist in private practice and in the organisational sector for the last 18 years.  Following my registration as a psychologist in 2002 I have continued to deepen my training and skills through regular professional development.  I offer long and short term psychotherapy in both English and Afrikaans to adults and groups.

Why do psychotherapy?

Starting the process of psychotherapy is a courageous step and I am deeply aware of the privilege and responsibility that comes with accompanying someone on this journey.

You might choose to start psychotherapy for a number of different reasons, and in different ways.  The decision to seek the help of a psychologist might come about because you are dealing with a crisis or an important life event, such as:

  • the loss of someone close
  • an important relationship that is breaking down or in tension (be it the relationship with a partner, a child, a parent, or work colleagues, to name a few)
  • a significant change, such as having a baby or changing careers
  • the need to make an important life decision
  • symptoms such as panic attacks or depression

You might also decide to do psychotherapy because you want to come to understand yourself better in relation to your life, your relationships, your work, your life goals, and more.

Outcomes of psychotherapy:

I offer Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy which helps you look inside yourself to make sense of your difficulties and to come to understand yourself more deeply.  This process has the potential to help you grow to a place where you are living more fully and authentically, with enjoyment and richness in your relationships, in your work, and in your expression of yourself through your interests.  It helps you create meaning, brings behavioural change and alleviates symptoms such as anxiety, depression or aggression.  The process is led by whatever you bring to therapy, and aims to make you more aware of aspects of your inner life that were subconscious or unconscious, in order to assist you to live a more integrated and whole life.

I also make use of brief psycho-dynamic solution focused approaches where your need might be for short term psychotherapy.

I have integrated Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy in my work which brings mindfulness to the way we experience ourselves in the present moment, often in an embodied way.

The therapy relationship:

Psychotherapy takes place in the context of a trusting relationship with a psychotherapist.  Exploring your inner life through this process necessitates deep care and attention from me as the psychotherapist, particularly as the process can be challenging as you face difficult and painful aspects of your life. I offer an environment of respect, safety, acceptance and compassion as I believe that this is optimal for emotional growth and healing.  I also respect individuals’ right to make their own life decisions and to do so in unique ways.

The psychotherapy I offer:

I work with adults in individual psychotherapy and groups, and am experienced in working with a variety of difficulties, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Relationship difficulties, including marital, parent-child, and professional relationships
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Anger and aggression
  • Trauma
  • Abuse
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Career and professional concerns
  • Parenting challenges, including mother-infant support
  • Personality and identity issues

How long will it take?

The psychotherapy can take the form of long or short term which is a decision that you and I will come to following the initial assessment process.  Typically deeper work with yourself and your relationship take time; however, it is also possible to find symptom relief and some direction on decisions through short term therapy.

Organisational work:

I have widespread experience in working with the emotional wellbeing of employees and management in organisations.  My work in this context over the last decade has involved team interventions (such as group therapy, trauma debriefing and training on behavioural skills), managerial consultancy (at a micro and macro level) and organisational assessments.
