As a Counselling Psychologist, I work with children, adolescents and adults facing a wide range of emotional, psychological and/or behavioural difficulties. Some of these include issues around identity and ‘not fitting in’; anxiety; depression; anger outbursts/temper tantrums; bullying; abuse; relationship difficulties; social withdrawal; trauma; familial conflict; sibling rivalry; grief/bereavement; adjustment disorders etc.
Considering the life as a whole, nobody is exempt from the pain, heartache and difficulties it sometimes brings. Seeking the professional help one needs is a sign, not of shame, but of strength.
I have a special interest in working with children/adolescents and their families. In addition to the required training received at the University of KwaZulu Natal, I have attended a number of external training courses dealing with a variety of issues relating to therapy with children. I strongly believe that children have a remarkable way of sharing their feelings, through something they know best…playing. In my therapy work I draw from a number of techniques and methods (including expressive techniques) in order to adapt to the unique individual needs of the child.
My work also involves intellectual assessments for children/adolescents experiencing academic difficulties at school. The assessment assists in identifying the child’s academic strengths and weaknesses thus allowing the appropriate interventions to follow.
When it comes time for subject choices and career decisions, adolescents often find themselves confused and frustrated. For some, such feelings can occur even in adulthood. A career assessment can assist the client in better understanding themselves and the career that is best suited to their personality, interests and values.
