What is a Counselling Psychologist?

Counselling psychologists assess, diagnose and treat people that are facing various life challenges and developmental problems in order to improve psychological well-being. Some of these life challenges could include trauma, relationship and family difficulties, career difficulties or problems related to poor motivation and self-esteem. I believe that all people, especially in times of hardship, are looking for connection and meaning in life. I put every effort into providing a non-judgemental, free-thinking environment for my clients to evaluate themselves, their relationships and all other elements of their life in order to find this connection and meaning. I believe that every person is strong and resilient, despite times of feeling immense weakness, and I think that finding the strength to explore our weakness is the first step to reaching our full strength and potential.

Who am I?

I am a counselling psychologist registered with the HPCSA and I work with both adolescents and adults. I believe that we derive meaning in our lives from our relational context. Work, marriage, friendships and parenting are all rooted in relationships some way or another. Having said this, we are forced to function in isolation in our own minds. Understanding how and why we function the way we do provides a gateway for us to make a choice. We can choose to function as we always have, but with a better understanding of why, or if we feel that we need to, we can start to make changes. I believe that by understanding ourselves (past and present) and our relational patterns we can become well-balanced individuals with the base to reach our full potential.
